Did you know that a mattress is one of the most important investments you will ever make? It’s true! While mattresses can seem expensive at first, they are something that you’ll sleep on every night for upwards of 10 years. When a person’s preferences or circumstances change, there may be a need to replace your mattress even sooner than expected. So, what mattress is right for me now? And which one will suit my current needs? Well, EZ Living Furniture is dedicated to helping you with your mattress selection and has compiled a foolproof guide to help you choose the right mattress for the right stage of your life.

Baby's crib with mattress.

Infancy

On average, a newborn baby will remain in a crib until at least 18 months old. The mattresses that fit inside a crib typically measure 120cm in length and 60cm in width. Crib mattresses usually only consist of a single layer of memory foam so it’s essential that you choose a firmer mattress to ensure that your baby is supported and has a fully rested sleep. Don’t forget to also buy a waterproof mattress protector or rubber sheet too. Memory foam is very porous; if it gets wet, the moisture will stay in the mattress unless it is properly ventilated/cleaned.

Childhood

A child will usually graduate from a crib to a “big” bed anywhere from 18 months to 3.5 years old. During this time, you should try to opt for a mattress with a spring system and memory foam. This is essential because although your child is still relatively light and does not require a lot of support you have to think about yourself too! Yes, you. As a parent, you might spend countless hours and nights resting next to your little one if they become distressed during the night. Ask yourself this - do you want to wake up tired and in pain? I didn’t think so.

Our Recommendation: The Tranquil Mattress.

Teenager

Teenagers need more support during the night than younger children which is why it is so important to upgrade their mattresses at this stage of their lives. Opt for a mattress with pocket springs for personalised support and memory foam to effectively hold their body shape. The best thing about memory foam is that it repeatedly remoulds when any changes occur, which means when a teenager grows it will continuously remould to their body shape. However, the type of memory foam is important, so you must pay attention to this. Memory foam is graded at 40, 50, 60, 70 and 85 and can be either open-cell or closed-cell. The grade dictates the thickness of the foam, 85 being the highest grade and thickest foam. Closed-cell memory foam tends to retain heat and make people hot, whereas open-cell memory foam does not. Lower-graded memory foam can trap heat which isn’t ideal for teenagers because they tend to sweat more than most because they are more physically active at this age.

Our Recommendation: The Pocket 1000.

College

If your pre-adolescent child is heading off to college or fleeing the nest to join the workforce, it is time for a new mattress. Of course, any rented accommodation they will be moving into will likely already have a mattress available, but is it a good one? Not only that but how many people have slept on that mattress in your rental before you? It’s disgusting to think about, especially when you consider that a mattress doubles in weight every 8 years thanks to a combination of human debris (skin cells) and dust mites. We also lose half a pint of fluid (sometimes more) every night - most of which ends up on our mattresses.

Our Recommendation: The Cashmere.

Rental

If you know you’ll be renting long-term, you should definitely think about investing in a good-quality, mid-range mattress that’s both supportive and doesn’t cost the earth. Pocket springs are always a good option if you’re looking for individualised support and relatively inexpensive comfort materials.

Our Recommendation: The Meave.

First Home

You have achieved the (somewhat) impossible task of purchasing your first home - congratulations! Now comes the expensive yet necessary job of filling it. To avoid a huge furniture bill when you first move in, it’s important to only invest in the essentials first and this, of course, includes a mattress. After all, you can’t get a good night’s sleep without one and a good-quality one at that. When transitioning from a rented property to a new home, there are a few mattress options for couples looking to upgrade. Consider a double-sized mattress if you and your partner like to cuddle or if you sleep alone and like the excess room to starfish during the night. Guest bedrooms can also benefit from a double mattress.

Alternatively, a king-size or super-king-size mattress will provide a generous amount of space for couples when sleeping. Opt for the larger size if you and your partner tend to move around a lot or overheat at night.

Our Recommendation: Billionaire.

Upgrade

You have likely had your first-home mattress for some time now and it’s finally time to go all out and splurge on the best mattress you’ve ever had. Picking your dream mattress is different for everyone. Some individuals will value a hotel vibe the most while others might just want a simple upgrade in size or comfort. Whatever your decision, a super-king mattress should be the size you choose. This is the biggest mattress size available in Ireland, measuring at 180cm x 200cm, it is perfect for co-sleeping parents, tall couples, or anyone who just wants a little bit of extra room for comfort.

Our Recommendation: Grande Royale.

Pregnancy

Women will often experience discomfort during pregnancy, and this doesn’t stop in the evenings either. During the night, pregnant women are prone to overheating and a feeling of general unease. To combat this, choose a mattress that has cooling properties and is hypoallergenic. Prioritise latex mattresses, these are similar to memory foam with regard to support and moulding to a person’s body shape but are breathable and hypoallergenic, making them perfect for someone who suffers from allergies.

Our Recommendation: The Latex Wellbeing.

Injury & Old Age

If you suffer from back pain or have an ongoing injury, we suggest choosing a medium-to-firm or firm mattress with memory foam or latex. This will mould to your body as you sleep and help to relieve pressure points. Centre-third reinforcement is another mattress feature worth checking out. It will have additional support in the centre-third section of the mattress and supports a natural spine, hip, and shoulder alignment. This feature also allows your back muscles to fully relax. This mattress type is also suitable for those of an older age where more support is required at night.

Our Recommendation: The Rian Therapeutic Mattress.

Mattresses are designed to give you a comfortable and relaxing sleep night after night, but not all are made equal which is why it is so important to choose one based on your and your partner’s individual requirements. If you are a little confused with mattress-based terminology or don’t even know where to start, we suggest chatting with one of our mattress experts online to help you with your decision or popping into one of our physical stores to try one out for size (literally).
