First, you should only pick a piece that you love. You will be looking at this a lot so you may as well get something out of it. Second is the colour scheme. If your walls are painted with a strong colour then it may be possible that some artwork will clash with the surrounding hues. Third, is size. It's a good idea to find out the dimensions of the piece you are going to buy, cut out a silhouette and put it on the wall. This will let you see if it is too small too big, and is also a great thing to do if you intend to have multiple pieces of wall art on the same surface.
