When choosing a bed for your bedroom, size matters! But finding the right bed and mattress size for you can be difficult especially when you consider that mattress sizes tend to differ between countries. In this latest EZ Living Furniture blog, we’ll discuss the standard Irish and UK mattress and bed sizes and what situations they can be used in.

3ft Single Mattresses & Bed Frames

Single beds have just enough space for one person. While single beds are fine for adults on the odd occasion, we wouldn’t recommend this size for a grown adult permanently. This size is most suitable for a child or teenager’s bedroom. A guest bedroom could also benefit hugely from this size if you only tend to accommodate guests every now and again. Single mattresses measure at 6’3” in length and 3ft in width or 190cm x 90cm.

4ft Small Double Mattresses & Bed Frames

Small double mattresses and bed frames are wider than a single but smaller in width than a standard double. It can provide plenty of space for one or two (although you might find that could be a little too “cosy” for two adults). This is the perfect solution for those who don’t have adequate space for a double bed but want to make it appear like they do. There isn’t a massive difference in size between a small double and a standard double mattress. All you gain with a 4ft double is an extra 6” in width while the length remains exactly the same. The total measurement of a small double mattress in cm is 120cm x 190cm.

4ft 6 Mattresses & Bed Frames

A standard double mattress (4ft’6”) (135cm x 190cm) is designed to sleep two adults comfortably. This is the most commonly used and widely available size in Ireland and the UK. Double beds tend to fit most standard main bedrooms so size is never usually an issue. While it can accommodate two, some of the larger alternatives listed below might be the preferred choice for many others.

5ft Mattresses & Bed Frames

5ft bed frames and mattresses are also known as “king-size”. This bigger-than-usual size is one that many would prefer, but the size of your bedroom can essentially determine whether you can accommodate one or not. Room too big? A king bed will look small and out of place in the space. Too small? And it won’t fit. This would easily sleep two adults with some extra space left over. If you want luxury sleeping for a guest bedroom or your main bedroom, this size would be the perfect choice. A king mattress measures at 5'0" x 6'6" or 150cm x 200cm.

6ft Mattresses & Bed Frames

If you have plenty of space to play with, a super-king 6ft bed could be the best choice for you. It is suitable for large open-plan rooms, whether a main bedroom, guest room, or even a child’s bedroom. It has a considerable amount of room for two adults and will even have a great deal of space remaining. If you are looking for something wider than a king, a super-king is the best option for you. The only difference between the two is the width because a king-size mattress is 5ft in width while a super king measures at 6ft in width. A typical super-king mattress measures at 6'0" x 6'6" or 180cm x 200cm.

Bed Frame & Base Sizes

It's important to know that while divan bed sizes typically correspond with their accompanying mattress size, bed frames can measure up to 8 inches (20cm) bigger. The exact size difference is hard to estimate because it is dependent on the design. For instance, a sleigh bed will be considerably bigger than other styles which is why it is important to get the exact dimensions of your base from your retailer and measure it against your available space.

For example: The Grenoble 5ft Bed Frame measures at 170cm in width and 215cm in length. The average king mattress size is only 150cm x 200cm, so if you only allowed for the mattress size, you'd find that you would be 20cm too short in width and 15cm too short in length.

Now that you know the best places to put your new bed frame and mattress, it’s time to start deciding on the complementary items you need to surround it. Choose from storage solutions such as bedside lockers, chests of drawers, or blanket boxes. Alternatively, you could start deciding on those all-important finishing touches i.e. home accessories.
