For many of us, the holiday season, and primarily Christmas Day, is all about gathering around a large dining table to share stories and create long-lasting memories. What stands out the most, of course, is the incredible company, but what adds to that feeling of joy is a perfectly decorated festive tablescape and some wonderful food to accompany it. Whether you’re planning on hosting your very first Christmas party or welcoming everyone back to yours again this year, an inviting and striking set-up will make your holiday meal extra special. In this blog, EZ Living Furniture guides you through the steps to transform your festive dining table display from boring and predictable to cosy and whimsical.

Start With A Blank Canvas
The key to any stunning table decor is to start by removing everyday decor and utensils. If you are someone who permanently keeps a basket of napkins, a bowl of lemons, or a scented candle in the middle of the table, it’s time to clear them away and tuck them neatly out of sight. The same can be said for a tablecloth; while they are great for protecting the surface of a dining table, they can also take away from its appearance, creating a dated and not-so-special, everyday look.

Decide On A Theme In Advance
Instead of rushing off and purchasing a whole host of decorations and ornaments that don’t match or fit a particular theme, it’s important to plan ahead. Start by researching some popular themes online and choosing your favourite. This year, there are lots of trending options to pick from, some of which can be found in our blog below. Whether you land on traditional red and white candy cane decor or contemporary silver and champagne glam decor, knowing what colours and textures to shop for will save you money in the long run.

Start Shopping Before The Holiday Rush
Now’s the fun part – shopping! You’ll need a selection of items, including garlands, wreaths, sprays, baubles, napkins, napkin rings, cutlery, placemats, candle holders and figurines, to create the ultimate festive dining experience. It’s important to stick with the primary colours of your theme and any complementary colours and textures when choosing your table decorations. Thankfully, you won’t need to look very far, as we (EZ Living Furniture) have pulled out all the stops this year with the selection available and a wide range of colours. And right now, there’s 20% off everything in our Christmas department, so you can get yours for less when you shop before the last-minute holiday rush!
One of our must-haves for any dining setup and brand new this year is the Adair Hanging Christmas Wreath (pictured above). With its delicate, realistic hanging foliage and LED lights, it will immediately draw the eye of anyone in its presence, creating the start of a very spectacular dining display.

Embellish Your Table Ahead Of Time
Christmas Day is filled with lots of activity, and sometimes the last thing any of us wants to do is decorate our table for dinner. Leaving the decor until Christmas day is something we don’t recommend; instead, plan to decorate your table a few days in advance. Once you have set aside a day and time, grab all your decorations and lay them out near your table for easy accessibility.

It's Time To "Deck" That Dining Table
It’s finally time to decorate your table. You should have all your decorations close by for easy access and have a general idea of how you want your dining display to look. For the centre of the table, use a table runner or two (depending on the size of your table), or a long, full-bodied garland for a forest wonderland theme. Add lights, baubles, LED candles or all three to add a luxurious and festive finish.

Don't Forget Your Dinnerware
Once the centre of the table is looking as glamorous as can be, turn your attention to your dinnerware, placemats and napkins. Start by adding your placemats to each setting around the dining table. These placemats should be in your chosen theme’s colour or a complementary shade. For added texture, we suggest a woven design for a woodland theme, a glittered finish for a glam theme, and a matte surface for a traditional red and white theme.
Next, stack your dinnerware on each placemat, making sure to include any bowls or plates that will be needed for Christmas dinner. This assembly will help create depth and interest in your dining table design. Place your cutlery alongside each setting. Again, make sure everything you need for each course is there, including spoons for dessert and starter knives and forks.
For the final finishing touch, use napkins, elegantly folded or pulled through napkin rings. Not only is this a functional addition, especially for those messy eaters, but it also adds that professional touch to your dining table decor. If napkins aren’t your thing or are placed in the centre of the table instead, try using small decorations for your finishing touch instead. Baubles are a great alternative (pictured above) and can create a real statement, particularly if you choose a style that’s out of the box, like our Xmas Present Bauble here.
Now that your dining table is all set up and ready for the big day, it’s time to start planning that all-important Christmas Day menu.
